Orofacial Myology (OM)
Orofacial myology (OM) or oral motor focuses on assessing and treating orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) affecting facial and oral muscles. Key functions include improving oral rest posture, swallowing patterns, and breathing habits, as well as addressing speech and dental health issues. OM practitioners conduct comprehensive evaluations and use techniques like tongue and lip exercises, swallowing methods, and breathing exercises. OM therapy benefits speech clarity, swallowing function, and orthodontic outcomes while alleviating TMJ dysfunction.
ORAL MOTOR ASSESSMENT
Oral motor assessments are essential for evaluating the function and health of the oral and facial muscles. Key components include examining the structure and function of these muscles, which helps identify any abnormalities or weaknesses. The assessment also measures the strength and range of motion of oral structures, such as the tongue, lips, and jaw, to determine their effectiveness during speech and swallowing. Additionally, the coordination of movements is assessed to ensure that the child can articulate sounds clearly and swallow safely. This comprehensive evaluation helps guide interventions and treatments for any identified oral motor difficulties.
